Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out how mothers¡¯ parenting stress can influence mothers¡¯ reactions to children¡¯s negative emotions. Participants were 487 mothers whose children, four to six years old, attended a preschool or kindergarten. For each research question, t-test and multiple regression analysis were used. The result of study are as follow: First, sub factor of mothers¡¯ parenting stress and sub factor of mothers¡¯ reaction to children¡¯s negative emotions didn¡¯t show any sex differences. However, boys show higher responsiveness when they were encouraged to express negative emotions and when their mothers showed parenting stress due to inattentiveness of children. Secondly, sub factor of parenting stress influenced sub factor of mothers¡¯ reaction to children¡¯s negative emotions in general. Thirdly, maternal depression most significantly affected stress reaction and punitive reaction among all the parenting stresses. In addition, children¡¯s demand had the highest effect on minimization of reaction by mothers. Furthermore, mothers¡¯ social isolation influenced expressive encouragement, emotion-focused reaction and problem-focused reaction greatly.
